Feather allergy is not so common among people. It is very rare that people develop allergic reactions to feather pillows and mattresses. Dust mite allergy is often misinterpreted as feather allergy. Most of the people who develop allergic reactions tend to change their bedding and feel comfortable and relaxed and after changing.

Symptoms of feather allergy

Even though this kind of allergy is rare but the one effected can suffer from certain kind of symptoms. The most common symptoms of feather allergy are as follows

  • Watery eyes
  • Runny rose
  • Nasal conjestion
  • Facial pain
  • Sneezing
  • Facial pain
  • Sinus pressure
  • Swollen skin
  • Post natal drip
  • Blue skin under the eyes
  • Insomniac
  • Itching

Apart from these common symptoms, there are certain severe sypmtoms of feather allergy. If not treated on time it may take the life of the one effected. The severe symptoms for feather allergy are as follows

  • Breathing problem
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Depression
  • Sudden weight loss

If you are suffering with one of these symptoms then you must consult your doctor immediately. Negligence may lead you to loose your life.

Your doctor will conduct allergy test and can tell you what exactly is causing you allergic and will also suggest remedial measures in order to avoid such allergy in future.

If you are using down bedding and are allergic to feathers then get rid of them. Replace all your pillows, mattresses and comforters with synthetic one. Place protective covers over the pillows in order to avoid being in contact with allergen.

How can feather allergy be treated?

Once you suffer with allergic reactions do consult an allergist. Your doctor will carry out certain tests. Two types of tests will be conducted one is skin prick test and the other one is blood test.

  • Skin prick test: In order to conduct this test the doctor will insert small amount of down extract into the skin with the help of a needle. If the person is allergic to that particular allergen then he or she will get allergic reaction around the skin like the skin turning red, itchiness around the skin etc. If there is no reaction that means the allergy is not due to feather.
  • Blood tests: here the doctor will collect your blood sample and carry out certain tests to find out what exactly caused you allergic.

After conducting the tests the doctor will prescribe you medicines and also give you mesures in order to avoid such allergy later on.
