Milk Allergy – Foods to Avoid

Milk allergy is one of the type of food allergies, milk allergy is an adverse immune reaction to one or more of the constituents of the milk from any animal, most commonly from cow’s milk.

Milk allergy is most common among young children and infants. Sensitivity to the cow’s milk will be varying from one person to another person. Around 2.5 percent of young children less than 3 years of age are mostly allergic to milk.

Most of the children are ultimately outgrowing with milk allergy. The milk allergy is most possible to be present in the children those who are having higher levels of  cow’s milk Antibodies in their blood.

Blood tests which measures these antibodies in their blood can be helpful for your allergist to determine that whether or not child is likely to outgrow a milk allergy. Some people are having a severe reaction just after they are ingesting a minute quantity of milk. Sometimes reactions caused by milk can be very severe and also it will be life-threatening.

Children with milk allergy must avoid milk in all forms. This includes all the dairy products and milk along with the inclusion of “lactose free” versions of the milk products. Children with milk allergy should also avoid anything that contains the traces of milk ingredients in it. It is very important to know the symptoms of a severe allergic reaction that is called as Anaphylaxis.

Food to Avoid -Milk Allergy

  • Bread, cookies, cakes crackers- baked goods
  • White Sauces and Au gratin dishes
  • Cereals
  • Cake mix
  • Chewing gum
  • Donuts
  • Malted milk
  • Creamed or scalloped foods
  • Coffee creamers
  • Sherbet
  • Salad dressings
  • Nougat (fond in some of the candies).
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Chocolate and cream candy

The following foods often contains cow’s milk protein. Always check the label of any food product before buying. If the product do not contain label do ask the shopkeeper if it contains milk or milk product.

Dairy Products to Avoid

  • Butter
  • Cheese, including cheese sauces and cottage cheese
  • Pudding
  • Ice cream
  • Yogurt
  • Custard
  • Cream, including sour cream
  • Milk, including powdered milk, butter milk and evaporated milk.

Milk is sometimes found in following

  • Margarine
  • Nougat
  • Non-dairy products
  • Nisin
  • Baked goods
  • Caramel candies
  • Artificial butter flavour
  • Lactic acid starter culture and other bacterial cultures.
  • Luncheon meat, sausages, hot dogs.

Avoidance of these following products can be very good for controlling the allergy to milk and it will be stopping the growth of the allergens in your body.
