Fruits, flowers and vegetables get their color from a pigment present in plant known as quercetin. It is a flavonoids found in onions, citrus and apples. Because of antioxidant activity quercetin has been used as medicine to treat various ailments.

Quercetin for hay fever works because of its antihistamine effect residing in this pigment. Allergic reaction is triggered when histamines are produced by your immune system. It’s not necessary that ever one will experience identical symptoms when they come in contact with allergens. It completely depends on how your immune system reacts to foreign materials.

Few notable symptoms of hay fever are as follows: sneezing, watery eyes, itchy throat, itchy nose and congested nose. Serious conditions may include sweating, headache, insomnia and facial pain by blocked sinuses.

As mentioned above hay fever is caused by pollen like material, which enters into your body. Immune system in the body releases antibodies known as immunoglobulin IE to thwart this foreign material. The reaction releases histamines that cause allergic symptoms.

How to Use Quercetin for Hay Fever?

This bioflavonoid has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antihistamines that may help you to reduce hay fever symptoms.

Experts recommend taking 1000mg of quercetin thrice per day in extreme situations. For normal allergic reaction, take 250 to 600 mg of supplement per day to reduce nasal congestion, sneezing and water eyes.

Because most fruits and vegetables include this pigment you can alternatively consume them.

  • Frozen berries
  • Orange
  • 1 table spoon of flaxseeds
  • 1-2 desserts of local honey and yoghurt
  • 1 table spoon of manuka honey
  • Apple juice
  • blackcurrant juice

Depending on your allergic reaction you can increase or decrease the dosage of quercetin as prescribed by physician. Don’t use quercetin for hay fever without consulting doctor.
