According to official reports about 30% of world population is affected by allergies. Food, pollen, cosmetic materials and few metals can trigger this adverse reaction.

But, can stress induce allergic reaction?

We all knew about the impact of stress on immune system and mental peace.

An allergic reaction which is characterized by adverse reaction of immune system towards foreign substances can be stimulated due to stress.

How Stress Induce Allergic Reaction?

In case of an allergic reaction, IgE antibodies are produced to initiate a chemical reaction after ingesting allergic substances. Symptoms like itching, sneezing, blisters and asthma can be experienced by hypersensitive person because mast cells release histamines.

According to a journal published in 2004, due to stress immunoglobulins are released that trigger mast cells to produce histamines.

Taking anti-histamines reduce allergic signs and the affected person can relieve from inflammation.

Stress Can Lead to Severity in Allergy

A study carried out at Ohio State University called Late-phase reaction concluded that stress can increase an allergic reaction.

People with skin allergic symptoms were subjected to various mental stress conditions. The study concluded that people with higher stress experienced severe reaction the next day.

Emotional Stress and Atopic Dermatitis

Itching and scratching are main symptoms of this common skin disorder.

Person experience persistent itching and gets worse during night resulting in sleepless nights and physiological stress.

Depression or stress increased the itching and lead to scaly patches.

University of Maryland states that stress is one among the factor that increases eczema.

Stress along don’t trigger the reaction, but it will be accompanied by some allergens.

So, to determine the allergen you must get diagnosed by allergist. Your skin will be exposed to different substances through skin-prick test to confirm the allergen.

Once the allergen is confirmed you must avoid ingesting and physical contact.

Stress and Asthma

Asthma.org.uk states that 69% people with asthma said that stress trigger the condition.

An asthmatic person under stress gets angry, which in itself an emotional asthma trigger. Under stress people drink, smoke and don’t follow prescribed medicines, even this can lead to asthmatic condition.

Stress also releases hormones in bodies, which makes the person react swiftly leading to tight chest and coughing. (Source)
