Donning your wedding or engagement ring is exciting. But the new platinum ring may irritate your finger. A red, itchy and dry rash can be experienced by sensitive people.

Wedding ring allergy symptoms can be seen if the person is hypersensitive to platinum or nickel in the ornament. Other it can just be normal skin irritation.

What Causes Ring Allergy?

According to Medicinenet.com, people with chronic skin ailments like eczema or atopic dermatitis are more prone to wedding ring dermatitis.

Else, it can be caused due to soap or detergent build-up under the ring.

Irritation or skin rash starts with small patch, which begin to appear under the ring. After few days, weeks, months and in some cases years this small rash spontaneously develops into a chronic ailment.

One of the most common reasons for wedding ring allergy is nickel. 14K-18K gold ornaments include nickel for natural soft. People who’re allergic to nickel will experience ring allergy.

Unfortunately, most people aren’t aware that they are sensitive towards this metal. Most jewelry including platinum, gold and inexpensive gold coated ornaments include some traces of nickel.

Why does my ring cause a rash after several years?

Only a practicing allergist or dermatologist can determine the reason after diagnosis.

According to experts, over the years you may become sensitive to metal in the ring. As mentioned earlier, allergy signs may take long time before showing chronic reaction.

Wearing the ring on same finger for prolonged years make your skin no room to breathe. So, it’s recommended to remove the ring while washing, bathing and while sleeping.

Signs of the reaction may develop immediately or take few hours.

Blisters and red itchy rashes can be seen under the ring. In hypersensitive people, the allergy may spread to other parts of the body.

Remove the ring if you see adverse reaction over the skin. However, you can’t determine the allergen. Allergist will carry skin-prick test to confirm the allergen.

If you’re sensitive to nickel, then it’s recommended to stay away from ornaments made of this metal.

Researchers don’t know why exactly nickel or platinum causes the allergic reaction.

Though there is no cure to nickel allergy, you can reduce its symptoms by taking medication and by removing ring.

While purchasing new ring, make sure nickel isn’t included in the ornament.

Irritate Contact Dermatitis

If it isn’t an allergic reaction, then it can be an irritation caused by soap left under the ring.

The moisture trapped under the ring makes your skin irritated and result in a rash.

Remove the ring while washing your hands or bathing. Prevent moisture under the ring, and wear the ring on other finger if you’re wearing it on the same finger for years.

Consult allergist or dermatologist for ring allergy symptoms.
