Fragrance has become one of the most essential parts of our lives. It is used by almost all age groups on daily basis. However, for some people it may turn out to be allergic.

Fragrance allergy has become most common forms of contact allergy in adults. It’s not necessary that the person who is wearing perfume or fragrance will be affected by this allergy. But a person who comes in contact with the fragrance of his co-worker or the one who enters a room which was sprayed by freshener or a fragrance can also experience fragrance allergy symptoms. This is due to the fact that there are literally thousands of perfumes with varying ingredients that we come in contact to almost everywhere and every day.

Perfume has become part of our society and it’s hard to get away from it. Basically it is the fragrance of any unwanted substance that causes allergy. It may be perfume, deodorant, laundry detergent, fragrance from plastic, paper etc that triggers the allergy.

Symptoms of Fragrance Allergy

Fragrance sensitivity can give rise to two types of allergy symptoms. First is the seasonal allergy symptom that affects the respiratory, nose, eyes, and the second one is skin allergy symptom.

The following are the symptoms of fragrance allergy.

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Wheezing
  • Skin rash
  • Redness of skin
  • Skin itchiness
  • Breathing problem
  • Asthma symptoms

People who have asthma problem may be more sensitive to fragrances and may experience allergy symptoms or worsening asthma symptoms when exposed to perfumes, fragrances, and other chemicals.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies or allergies to indoor allergens like molds and animal allergens, then you are more likely to experience fragrance allergy.

How to Prevent Fragrance Allergy Symptoms?

If you are allergic to fragrances then here are few things that you should keep in mind:

  • Always use fragrance free lotions, soaps, skin care products, laundry detergents etc
  • Be cautious while using cleaning and deodorizing products at home
    Avoid all products containing fragrance for the best chance at avoiding your allergy symptoms.
  • Check everything that you buy and always choose hypoallergenic perfumes. If you want to wear perfume, you can choose also the weaker perfume concentrations
